Have you ever had a guest that didn’t want to leave? Your hospitality was so good, they just wanted to stay? They ate all of your food, never cleaned, put their feet up on your couch, and waited for you to offer more. We love entertaining and having guests over!! My husband and I love feeding them, fellowshipping, making them feel so relaxed in our home they could just take a nap!! We are also happy when they leave. Why? They are guests, they aren’t supposed to stay and help, they are supposed to enjoy your home and eventually leave.
What happens when you have two guests in a marriage relationship? Both spouses will take, they wont give, share, or think beforehand what the other needs. It’s really a roommate situation. They live together, but are only concerned about their needs, and their wants. Me, ME, MEEEE!! This is a relationship destined for disaster. Sadly, we see this more and more in todays world.
When you have children, you realize at a certain age, they are only concerned with their desires. They want what they want, and they want it now! IF you don’t follow through with their demands they will show you what it’s like to suffer. They will kick, scream, cry, bite, and have a major meltdown like it is the end of the world. Some children are never disciplined and grow up with the same mentality. Does your marriage seem childlike?
Discipline is never fun, it is never pleasant, and it usually hurts to be told no. The definition for discipline is the training of people to obey rules, a code of behavior, or morals. Most use punishment to correct disobedience. It’s teaching children to obey and learn right from wrong, and in a society that wants to rid the world of right and wrong, it gets harder each year.
If you have two childlike adults living together and calling it a marriage, you will see their world fall apart very quickly. Roommates are meant to live together to split the bills and maybe a few personal things. Here again you have 2 people looking out for numero uno! Number One! The “Me Monster.” Roommates aren’t likely to stay living together very long if they are both guests!! People find a roommate that is a type of host or hostess so they can continue their bad behavior.
Growing up is a part of life. It speaks of maturity, and patience, to look for ways to give and serve. This is especially true of a good or great marriage! God wants us to grow up in Him! He expects us to mature, to keep walking and move from milk to meat!! It’s apart of life, and it is a part of marriage!! Thinking like a guest is devastating to your marriage. So how should we think and act? Im glad you asked!! Join us next week for our conclusion in the series about being a guest or a host or hostess!!
Those who have a guest mindset, are also known for having bad behavior. When you are a child, you think like and act like a child. Bad behavior follows suit. You, who are a guest in marriage, tend to like things your way, and if not it’s the high way or everyone will pay!! Bad behavior is not applicable in marriage if you want to stay married for any length of time!
Our prayer for you this week is that you recognize what type of person you are to your marriage? Are you a host, hostess, or a guest? Is your marriage looking like last weeks or this weeks post? Praying you look at your actions and ask God to help you to change patterns and habits that aren’t helpful to your marriage. Thank you for taking time to see how you can have a happily ever married marriage!!
Monday: Proverbs 25:17 says, “Withdraw thy foot from thy neighbour’s house; lest he be weary of thee, and so hate thee.” Knowing when to leave is a blessing, knowing when to stop being a guest with your spouse is maturity.
Tuesday: 1 Peter 4:10 says, “As every man hath received the gift, [even so] minister the same one to another, as good stewards of the manifold grace of God.” We all love being a guest, and some love having guests. Pray that the Lord helps you to be a good guest when appropriate and when to stop being a guest, especially in marriage.
Wednesday: Proverbs 22:15 says, “Foolishness is bound up in the heart of a child; The rod of discipline will remove it far from him.” We are taught to remove foolishness from our hearts as children, and grow into mature adults.
Thursday: Hebrews 12:11 says, “Now no chastening for the present seemeth to be joyous, but grievous: nevertheless afterward it yieldeth the peaceable fruit of righteousness unto them which are exercised thereby.” Good fruit is always is pleasant!! Praying today for discipline to yield peace in our marriage!!
Friday: James 3:14-16 says, “But if you have bitter jealousy and selfish ambition in your heart, do not be arrogant and so lie against the truth. This wisdom is not that which comes down from above, but is earthly, natural, demonic. For where jealousy and selfish ambition exist, there is disorder and every evil thing.” Selfishness will destroy your marriage, pray today for a heart to give!
Saturday: 1 Corinthians 13:11 says, “When I was a child, I spake as a child, I understood as a child, I thought as a child: but when I became a man, I put away childish things.” Praying to put away bad childish behavior and learn to think of your spouse first.
Sunday: Hebrews 5:13-14 says, “For every one that useth milk is unskilful in the word of righteousness: for he is a babe. But strong meat belongeth to them that are of full age, even those who by reason of use have their senses exercised to discern both good and evil.” Pray the Lord helps you to mature in Him and in your marriage.
